5 signs it may be time to replace your air-to-air heat pump

freida 27.9.2026

How to tell your heat pump needs replacement? Check our quick list.

An air-to-air heat pump can keep your home comfortable for many years. But over time, its performance can begin to change.

That doesn’t mean an older heat pump automatically needs replacing. If it still heats and cools your home effectively, runs reliably, and doesn’t require frequent repairs, there may be no reason to replace it just because of its age.

So, how do you know when it might actually be time to replace your heat pump? Here are five signs worth paying attention to.

A quick check list

Your heat pump may be worth replacing if:

PERFORMANCE ↓

Heating or cooling performance is noticeably weaker

ENERGY ↑

The unit works harder than before and the energy consumption has gone up

REPAIRS ↑

Repairs are becoming more frequent

SOUND ↑

The unit sounds different than before

AGE ↑

Several of these signs appear together

One sign alone doesn’t necessarily mean your heat pump needs replacing. Maintenance or a repair may still be the right solution.

When is it a good time to replace a heat pump?

1. It doesn’t heat or cool as well as it used to

One of the clearest signs is a noticeable change in performance. If your heat pump takes longer to reach the desired temperature or struggles to keep your home as comfortable as before, it may be worth having it checked.

Start with cleaning and maintenance. If performance remains noticeably weaker afterwards, it may be time to consider repair or replacement.

2. Your electricity consumption has increased

An ageing heat pump may need to work harder to maintain the same indoor temperature, which can lead to higher electricity consumption.

Energy use is affected by many factors, so an increase alone doesn’t mean the heat pump needs replacing. But if consumption rises alongside declining performance, it may be worth having the unit checked.

3. Repairs are becoming more frequent

An occasional repair doesn’t mean you need a new heat pump. But if problems become recurring or replacement parts are difficult to source, it may be worth comparing another repair with replacing the unit altogether.

The important question isn’t simply “Can it be repaired?” but “Does repairing it still make sense?”

4. It sounds or behaves differently

New noises, increased vibration, or irregular operation don’t necessarily mean your heat pump needs replacing, but they are good reasons to have it checked.

The cause may be simple, but changes in how an older heat pump operates can also be a sign of wear – especially when combined with declining performance.

5. Its age is starting to show

There is no single birthday on which an air-to-air heat pump suddenly becomes too old. Its lifespan depends on factors such as use, installation, operating conditions, and maintenance.

Age matters most as part of the bigger picture. If an older unit still performs reliably, there may be no reason to replace it. But when age comes together with declining performance, recurring faults, or other signs of wear, replacement becomes more relevant.

Before replacing your air-to-air heat pump, check whether maintenance is enough

A decline in performance doesn’t always mean that your air-to-air heat pump needs replacing.

Dirty filters and other maintenance needs can affect airflow and performance. In some cases, a proper service may be all that’s needed to get an otherwise healthy heat pump working as it should again.

That’s why it makes sense to rule out the simple things before deciding to replace the unit.

Service – what to do yourself and when to call an expert?

Some maintenance is easy to do yourself. Other jobs are better left to a professional.

1. Switch off the air-to-air heat pump

Switch off the unit with the remote control before starting.

2. Open the front cover of the indoor unit.

Carefully lift the front cover of the indoor unit until it stays open.

3. Carefully remove the coarse filters.

Release the filters carefully and pull them out of the indoor unit.

4. Vacuum the filters gently to remove dust and loose dirt.

Gently vacuum both sides of the filters to remove dust and loose dirt. Avoid pressing or damaging the filter mesh.

5. If visible dirt remains, rinse the filters with water.

If dirt remains, rinse the filters with clean lukewarm water.

6. Refit the filters correctly and close the cover.

Slide the filters back into their correct position and make sure they sit securely. Close the front cover before switching the unit back on.

Freida tip: You can put the filters back while they’re still wet – no need to wait for them to dry.

What do you gain with a new air-to-air heat pump?

Air-to-air heat pump technology has continued to develop. Depending on how old your existing unit is, a modern replacement can improve everything from efficiency and cold-weather performance to noise levels and everyday control.

The biggest difference, however, is often simply how effortlessly the heat pump fits into everyday life.

Better energy efficiency

Modern air-to-air heat pumps use improved technology to provide efficient heating and cooling. When replacing a considerably older model, this can mean more efficient operation and lower energy use.

Better performance when the temperature drops

Modern heat pumps designed for Nordic conditions are built to perform efficiently even at low outdoor temperatures.

Quieter, more even comfort

Modern indoor units can operate very quietly, while improved airflow helps distribute heat or cool air more evenly around the room.

Smart control (WiFi/app)

Many modern heat pumps can be controlled remotely through WiFi and an app, making it easy to adjust the temperature or manage schedules wherever you are.

Frequently asked questions

There is no exact lifespan that applies to every air-to-air heat pump. Its useful life depends on factors such as the model, installation, usage, operating conditions, and maintenance. Age is therefore best considered together with the unit’s performance and condition rather than as a replacement deadline.

If the heat pump still performs well and has a repairable individual fault, repairing it may make sense. Replacement becomes more relevant when an ageing unit has recurring problems, declining performance, or repairs that are becoming increasingly difficult to justify.

Often it can, but the existing location should be assessed before installation. A replacement is a good opportunity to check whether the indoor and outdoor units are still positioned optimally for the home and the new model.

Parts of an existing installation may sometimes be suitable for reuse, while others may need to be replaced. This depends on the old and new systems and the condition of the existing installation, so it should be assessed case by case.

Not sure what applies to your home? Call our experts and we’ll help you assess your existing installation.

No. If an ageing heat pump is already showing several signs of declining performance or requiring repeated repairs, you can consider replacing it before it stops working completely.

At the same time, there is no reason to replace a reliable heat pump prematurely simply because it is old.

Replacing an existing air-to-air heat pump can usually be completed within the same day. The exact time depends on the existing installation, the new heat pump, and whether any parts of the installation need to be modified or replaced.
